7-Preparing For Your Session

TEXTURES, LAYERS, & NEUTRALS

When choosing your session wardrobe, it is helpful to create a basic color palette.

Try to stick to warm and cool neutrals, and stay away from the bright red & orange color range as they do not photograph well.

Choose solid colors that layer well, and with details in the texture. Chosen prints and patterns should be minimal and soft.

There should be no logos or writing on your clothing as it becomes distracting in the photographs.

We will go over what to wear in detail during your session consultation.

I like to keep this Pinterest board of clothing & accessory ideas for you to browse through and see a visual for my thoughts above. Take a look, and don’t be afraid to run anything by me.

I would love to take a look at some photos of things in your closet or while you are out shopping.  Accessories that add tone and texture look amazing (stacked bracelets, necklaces, earrings).

Newborn sessions may take place in my beautiful natural light studio or on location or in your home. In studio you will have access to my collection of beautiful props. A few sugestions to prepare  . . .

1. Clothing for mom (and siblings, if present) is simple, light tones of cream, white, pale pinks/rose, and grays. Incorporating textures and layers is always a great idea.  Dad look great in a fitted white or gray casual t-shirt (nothing formal, please, no dress button ups or polo shirts) and pants/nice jeans, etc.

2. Clothing for Baby: 1 Onesie/Rompers, a diaper cover. I will have wraps/bonnets/headbands etc… baby will mostly be naked

3. Heirlooms: A special gift or family quilt if you would like to incorporate it.

4. Optional: 1-2 favorite baby blankets- the more texture the better- For example: Cableknit, quilted, etc. Stick to solid neutral colors if possible.

5. Snacks. You will thank me later.

6. An emergency touch up kit. Even if you have booked a makeup appointment, plan to bring a small touch up kit that includes lip color, a hair brush, bobby pins, etc. Anything you might need in the case of an emergency. It’s way better to be prepared, especially if we are shooting on location!

7. Diaper Bag filled with anything you may need to be away from home for up to 4 hours. Extra diapers, changing pad, wipes, any necessary bottles, a pacifier, etc.

8. Are you bringing another child to the session? Consider asking a family member to come along for assistance. When the child isn’t being photographed, you want to be able to focus on the camera, not your child.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING: Session Outfits that have busy patterns, cartoon characters, or sporting themes.

Older babies may also be photographed in just a diaper or I recommend well fitting, simple, neutral clothing.  My studio is stocked with various clothing for your baby to wear during their session as well.

I take an organic approach with newborn & baby sessions.

Newborns are welcomed, usually between 7-18 days old, into a warm, happy, calming, and beautiful atmosphere; where they thrive, sleep peacefully, and are allowed to just ‘be’.

Please come prepared to feed your baby as often as he/she needs, to get in some intimate photos with them, to snuggle, and to take a break from the frenzy that can sometimes make its way to the home of a newborn.  It is extremely helpful if the morning of your session baby is kept more awake and stimulated, so they are tired and cozy when they arrive to the studio.  A gentle bath is a fabulous idea before coming in! Please dress your newborn in something that can be remove WITHOUT going over their head or any tight elastic.

Recommended clothing for mom (and siblings, if present) is simple, light tones of cream, white, pale pinks/rose, and grays. Incorporating textures and layers is always a great idea and mamas are welcome to use my studio clothing.  Dad look great in a fitted white or gray casual t-shirt (nothing formal, please, no dress button ups or polo shirts) and pants/nice jeans, etc.

Newborn sessions can last anywhere from 1-3 hours and I completely take over, letting you have a break to watch, and relax, while sometimes asking dad (or mom) for a little assistance to insure the absolute safety of your new little one.

A note about siblings:  Depending on the ages of your new baby’s siblings, it’s often best if they are present for the beginning or end of the session, not our entire session.  This can lead to a less calm working environment and be more stressful for everyone in your new family.  I recommend dad being able to take them for a walk (great toy store around the corner!), to play outside on my front porch, etc.

Older babies may also be photographed in just a diaper or I recommend well fitting, simple, neutral clothing.  My studio is stocked with various clothing for your baby to wear during their session as well.
